Hyles lineata (Fabricius, 1775)

General distribution. This species occurs from Canada to Argentina. It is known from all the states of Canada and the United States (except Alaska), and it extends into South America along the Andes Mountains, avoiding the Amazon Basin.

Distribution in the DR. Widespread throughout the country.

Habitat. An insect that is generally found in open and highly degraded environments, and also in semi-desert areas, but always at low elevation.

Host plants. Its caterpillar is polyphagous, feeding on a considerable number of plants belonging mostly to the families Portulacaceae, Onagraceae and Nyctaginaceae .

Remarks. This species was wrongly identified as Hyles livornica (Esper,1780) by Haxaire (2016). In the Neotropical region, H. livornica has only been found (so far) in French Guiana (Haxaire, 1993).
