Family Coronulidae Leach, 1817
(nom. transl. Newman & Ross, 1976 [ex Coronulidae Pilsbry, 1916: 268 (synonymy) pro Coronulidea (sic) Leach, 1817: 68])
Type genus. Coronula Lamarck, 1802: 464; by original designation of Leach (1817: 68).
Diagnosis. Wall six-plated (R-CL1-CL2-C), relatively thick, mono-lamellar, or bi-lamellar when T-shaped flanges and longitudinal canals present; parietes without mid-rib; opercular plates reduced, tergum vestigial or absent, or tergum and scutum absent; apertural hood present.
Remarks. Leach (1817) included Tubicinella, Coronula and Chelonibia when he proposed this family, but did not specify the type genus. Since Coronula was the nominal genus upon which the family-group was based, it becomes, ipso facto, the type by original designation. Chelonibia has since been relegated to the Chelonibiidae . The Coronulidae is now recognized as including four subfamilies, the Coronulinae Leach, 1817, Cryptolepadinae subfam., nov. Tubicinellinae subfam. nov. and Xenobalaninae Gruvel, 1905 .
