Vernacular Names: Large Slit-faced Bat.
Synonyms: Nycteris baikii Gray 1866; Nycteris marica Kershaw 1923; Nycteris proxima Lönnberg and Gyldenstolpe 1925 .
Distribution: Senegal to Dem. Rep. Congo, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Mozambique; Zanzibar and Pemba.
Conservation: IUCN 2003 and IUCN / SSC Action Plan (2001) – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: hispida species group. Reviewed by Van Cakenberghe and De Vree (1993 b). N. marica is sometimes recognized as a distinct savanna subspecies, but this does not seem justified based on morphology; see Van Cakenberghe and De Vree (1993 b). See Hickey and Dunlop (2000).
