Anthocoptes transitionalis Hodgkiss 1913
Type host and locality. Acer rubrum L. ( Sapindaceae), USA, New York, Geneva.
Distribution. England (recorded here), Hungary (Ripka & de Lillo 1997), Serbia (Petanović & Stanković 1999) and USA (op. cit.)
Relation to the host. Originally found in deformed or "pustular" areas in the smooth bark of A. rubrum (red maple) (Hodgkiss 1913), and also recorded on the underside of leaves, causing russeting and drying of leaves (Batchelor 1952). In the British population studied here the mites were found vagrant on the underside of the leaves causing no apparent damage.
