Kalmia latifolia Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 391. 1753.
"Habitat in Marilandia, Virginia, Pensylvania." RCN: 3083.
Lectotype (Reveal in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 58. 1993): [icon] "Cistus Chamaerhododendros Mariana, Laurifolia, floribus expansis, summo ramulo in umbellam plurimis" in Plukenet, Amalth. Bot.: t. 379, f. 6. 1705; Almag. Mant.: 49. 1700. - Typotype: Herb. Sloane 93: 100 (BM-SL) .
Generitype of Kalmia Linnaeus (vide Hitchcock, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 153. 1929).
Current name: Kalmia latifolia L. ( Ericaceae).
Note: Many authors including Fernald (in Rhodora 42: 53. 1940), Lawrence (in Baileya 1: 64. 1953), Southall & Hardin (in J. Elisha Mitch. Sci. Soc. 90: 16. 1974), Reveal & al. (in Huntia 7: 219. 1987) regarded the name as partially or wholly based on Herb. Linn. 560.1 (LINN), and Ebinger (in Rhodora 76: 352. 1974) explicitly restricted the type to the top right-hand specimen on the sheet. However, the sheet lacks a Species Plantarum number and is a post-1753 addition to the collection and hence ineligible as lectotype. Annotations by Kalm on a sheet collected by him, and now in UPS, are reproduced by Lundqvist & Moberg (in Thunbergia 19: 7, f. 3. 1993).
