31. Culex cavernicolus Floch & Abonnenc, 1945b:

1 (M). Holotype M: Cayenne, French Guiana (IPP *); coll. E. Abonnenc; 17 Jan. 1940; no. 280.

Culex cavernicolus was synonymized with Cx. putumayensis Matheson by Rozeboom & Komp (1950: 95). The spelling of the name of this species was unjustifiably changed to cavernicola by Knight & Stone (1977) (see discussion in Harbach 2018). Two specimens listed in the original publication are wrongly designated as paratypes by Dégallier & Claustre (1980: 143). The holotype of Cx. cavernicolus, originally deposited in the IPG, was found in the IPP by Belkin (1968: 14) but was not seen by Harrison (1973: 279) nor Dégallier & Claustre (1980: 143), and was established as non-extant by Pecor et al. (1992: 61). The holotype was found in the general collection of the IPP during this study .
