Nigella hispanica Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 534. 1753.
"Habitat in Hispania, Monspelii." RCN: 3970.
Lectotype (Zohary in Pl. Syst. Evol. 142: 80. 1983): [icon] " Nigella Hispanica flore amplo" in Morison, Pl. Hist. Univ. 3: 516, s. 12, t. 18, f. 9. 1699.
Current name: Nigella hispanica L. ( Ranunculaceae).
Note: López González (in Anales Jard. Bot. Madrid 41: 467-468. 1985), in a discussion of Art. 9.3 in the Sydney Code, argued that specimens held precedence over illustrations as types, and that 700.8 (LINN), identifiable as N. gallica Jordan, should displace the type chosen by Zohary. This is, however, erroneous.
