Taxon classification Animalia Stylommatophora Ariophantidae

Family ARIOPHANTIDAE Godwin Austen

Short description.

Snails or semi-slugs. Shell (very) small to very large, dextral or sinistral, (low-)conical, ellipsoid, lenticular or discoid; semi-slugs with a (partly) reduced shell. Sculpture absent, or inconspicuous (rarely more distinct) spiral and/or radial sculpture present. Aperture without teeth or lamellae, peristome usually thin and not reflected. Umbilicus closed or open, narrow (Family description adapted from Baker (1941), and Solem (1966). In contrast to our earlier paper, Liew et al. 2009, we here include the Dyakiinae in Ariophantidae, rather than treating them as a separate family).

Habitat and distribution.

Generally forest species found on leaf litter and vegetation. Throughout South, East, and Southeast Asia, and Oceania, with a few species circumtropically introduced.
