Type species: Bdella silvaticus Kramer, 1881 [original designation]

Diagnosis. Hypostome with two pairs of prominent ventral setae; with or without median prodorsal eye; genital tracheae well-developed; chelicerae elongated, movable chela reduced and needle-like; sometimes with unpaired seta between coxae IV; tibiae I, IV and tarsi III, IV with trichobothria; external vertical setae (lps) absent; palp tibiotarsus cylindrical and elongate.
