Third maxilliped (Fig. 30 C) merus subcircular, ischium subquadrate, about same length as merus. Proportionally long, slender ambulatory legs (Figs. 8 A‒F; 100E); P5 merus 0.7 cl in holotype male, 0.6 in paratype female. Chelipeds (Figs. 8 A‒F; 39A‒D; 100E–G) subequal in length, slightly dissimilar in females, heteromorphic in males. Major chela of males (Fig. 39 A) with thick propodus, cutting margins with wide teeth. Minor chela of both sexes (Fig. 39 B, D) with short teeth of about same size (2 long, sharp teeth that overlap dactylus when closed in holotype male). Inner margin of cheliped carpus smooth. Fused thoracic sternites 1, 2 (Fig. 51 C) triangular, proportionally narrow, short. Male pleon (Figs. 51 C; 58C) with proportionally short telson. G1 (Figs. 67 J, K; 68A‒D) stout, distal segment slightly curved, distal segment curved inwards, upwards, with short to long spinules. G2 (Fig. 67 L) about 3/4 G1 length, straight, slender, distal segment short, straight. Female pleon (Fig. 86 C) with lateral margins of somites strongly convex; telson proportionally short. Sterno-pleonal cavity of female (Fig. 90 C) moderately deep, vulvae far apart from each other.
Colour. The carapace is brownish white to light brown in life, with the chelipeds white and the ambulatory legs white to light brown (Fig. 100 E‒G).
Etymology. The species epithet, leptomerus, refers to the relatively longer and more slender ambulatory legs of individuals as compared to congeners. The name is used as a noun in apposition.
Remarks. Camatopsis leptomerus n. sp. is easily distinguished from congeners by having the proportionately longest and most slender ambulatory meri (Fig. 8 A‒F). Its G1 is also the straightest, with the distal part twisting gently but distinctly upwards rather than turned to one side (when examined ex situ) (Figs. 67 J, K; 68A‒D). The distal part of the G1 is distinctly bent inwards in congeners. This is evident even in small specimens (see remarks for genus and Camatopsis rubida). Variation in the morphologies of the third maxillipeds and chela are also discussed under the generic remarks.
Camatopsis leptomerus n. sp. is one of the widest ranging species, occurring from Indonesia to New Caledonia and southern Taiwan. It apparently occurs sympatrically with species like C. rubida in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. In Indonesia, both species were collected from one Siboga station (312) in Saleh Bay on the north coast of Sumbawa.
Serène & Vadon’s (1981: 118, 119, 120, 123) record of “ Camatopsis rubidus ” [sic] from the Philippines requires confirmation but is provisionally referred to C. leptomerus n. sp. given its occurrence in the area.
Distribution. Western Pacific (southern Taiwan to Malaysia, Indonesia, New Caledonia). Depth: 13– 660 m.
