Distribution. Western Atlantic—North Carolina to Florida, Gulf of Mexico, West Indies, Colombia, Trinidad, Suriname, French Guiana to Brazil (Paraíba, Pernambuco, and Rio de Janeiro) (Melo 1998; Melo & Veloso 2005; Coelho 2006; Serejo et al. 2006; Coelho et al. 2008).

Ecological notes. From shallow waters to 140 m. Found on sand and hard bottoms and on calcareous algae (Melo 1996).

Remarks. The species was first described as Podochela riisei by Stimpson in 1860 and transferred to the genus Coryrhynchus by Coelho (2006), in a revision of the genus Podochela .
