Although Neomorphaster margaritaceus is a familiar North Atlantic species, this is the first taxonomic accounting of Neomorphaster since it has been returned to the Stichasteridae following molecular phylogenetic revisions (Mah & Foltz 2011b). This differs from Ringvold & Anderson (2016) which cited occurrence from the Faroe Islands. Clark & Downey (1992) cited it as a member of Fisher’s Neomorphasteridae, a name which has since been synonymized following reinstatement of the Stichasteridae (Mah & Foltz 2011b) .

The eastern Atlantic Stichastrella is also a member of the Stichasteridae present in the northern hemisphere.
