Two syntype specimens, both female, were located out of the four Gorham (1881) mentions examining. One of these, bearing several type labels, is designated as the lectotype, the other is designated as a paralectotype. Labels for the designated lectotype specimen are as follows:

“ SYN-/ TYPE ” “Type ♀ ” “Irazu,/ 6-7000 ft. / H. Rogers. ” “ B.C.A.Col. III.(2)./ Photuris /simplex, /Gorham ♀ ” “Type.” “ Photuris /simplex/Gorham.”. A red label is added with the following text: “ LECTOTYPE / Photuris simplex Gorham /Designated by/Martin and Powell 2020” .
