Carangidae View in CoL View at ENA
Campogramma glaycos (Lacepède, 1801) —Vadigo
* Caranx crysos (Mitchill, 1815) —Blue runner
New record from Madeira based on numerous underwater photos by the first author (e.g. figure 4) and two specimens in the collection of the MMF (MMF 26885 and 34505).
Caranx hippos (Linné, 176)—Crevalle jack
Recorded from Madeira by Smith-Vaniz in Whitehead et al. (1986: 825). A closely related and very similar species, Caranx fischeri , has been described from the eastern Atlantic ( Smith-Vaniz and Carpenter 2007; photo in Wirtz et al. 2007). Specimens or photos are needed to decide if both these species occur at Madeira or only one of them.
* Caranx latus Agassiz, 1831 —Horse-eye jack
Caranx lugubris Poey, 1860 —Black jack
Caranx rhonchus Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1817 —False scad
Not recorded from Madeira by Smith-Vaniz in Whitehead et al. (1986: 827) or Smith-Vaniz et al. in Quéro et al. (1990: 734). Fowler (1936: 685) states under Decapterus rhonchus "In the U.S. National Museum an adult from Madeira, obtained by Captain William Stimpson." This record, however, needs verification.
* Decapterus macarellus (Cuvier, 1833) —Mackerel scad
* Decapterus punctatus (Cuvier, 1829) —Round scad
Not mentioned from Madeira by Smith-Vaniz in Whitehead et al. (1986: 828) but recorded from Madeira by Smith-Vaniz et al. in Quéro et al. (1990: 737-738).
Lichia amia (Linnaeus, 1758) —Leerfish
* Naucrates ductor (Linnaeus, 1758) —Pilotfish
* Pseudocaranx dentex (Bloch & Schneider, 1801)—White trevally
Selene dorsalis (Gill, 1863) —African moonfish
* Seriola dumerili ( Risso, 1810) View in CoL —Greater amberjack
Not recorded from Madeira by Smith-Vaniz in Whitehead et al. (1986: 837-838) or Smith-Vaniz et al. in Quéro et al. (1990: 747) but common at Madeira and recorded from there by Wirtz (1994: 84), with a colour photo of animals from Madeira. Seriola dumerili View in CoL is very similar to Seriola carpenteri Mather, 1971 View in CoL ; the only external charcter that can be used to distinguish adults of the two species is the shape of the posterior end of the upper jaw (supramaxilla wider in S. dumerili View in CoL ). A photo of the head of an animal from Madeira was sent to Willam Smith-Vaniz who positively identified it as belonging to Seriola dumerili View in CoL . Two specimens in the MMF collection (MMF 35582 and 35583).
* Seriola fasciata (Bloch, 1793) —Lesser amberjack
* Seriola rivoliana Valenciennes, 1833 —Almaco jack
* Trachinotus ovatus (Linnaeus, 1758) —Derbio
* Trachurus picturatus ( Bowdich, 1825) View in CoL —Blue jack mackerel
* Trachurus trachurus (Linnaeus, 1758) View in CoL —Atlantic horse mackerel
