Material examined. Petro-UFS—24 (1 M, 1 F); size range: 27.90 ≤ CW ≤ 28.82 mm; average: CW = 28.36 ± 0.65 mm; CZUFS CRU- 00071. Penaeid—2 (1 M, 1 F); size range: 9.54 ≤ CW ≤ 20.01 mm; average: CW = 14.77 ± 7.40 mm; CZUFS CRU- 00248.
Stations. Petro-UFS—4, 5, 11, and 17; Penaeid—3 and 4.
Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (from New Jersey to south of Florida, Bermuda, and Gulf of Mexico), Antilles, Venezuela, Guyana, French Guiana, and Brazil (from Amapá to Rio Grande do Sul) ( Melo 1996; Coelho et al. 2008).
Ecological notes. From shallow waters to 90 m. On brackish waterways and bays. Lives on sand, gravel, broken shell and mud bottoms ( Melo 1996).
Remarks. Previously recorded as Portunus spinimanus Latreille ; Portunus (Achelous) spinimanus ; Portunus (Achelous) vossi Lemaitre , and Lupa banksii Leach ( Coelho & Ramos 1972; Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1992; Barreto et al. 1993; Melo 1996; Coelho et al. 2004; Coelho-Filho 2006), and as Achelous spinimanus ( Smith 1869) .
