Recognition. Distinguished from other Japanese species by dark legs, bright blue pruinescence of the face, spine on hind tibia lacking, and stout anterodorsal and posterodorsal bristles on mid and hindlegs lacking, and generally darker wings.
Re-description. Wing length 4.2–5.0 mm. Male. Clothed in blue pruinescence except scutum brown. Head rounded; compound eyes large, rounded ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 A). Face with blue pruinescence and median light brown stripe; face narrowest just below antennae, slightly wider than width of antennal sockets; lower margin of face with shallow cleft and low carina; gena one-fifth as wide as height of eye. Ocellar bristles longest among cranial bristles; occiput with 2 pairs of bristles posterior to ocellar triangle; postocular with row of short bristles along margin of eye, upper half darker and more stout than lower bristles. Arista-like stylus long and slender, tapered apically. Palpus cylindrical, slender, length less than half height of eye.
Pleura, postpronotal lobe, notopleuron and scutellum with pale blue pruinescence, much more faint on scutum; posterolateral corner of scutum near postalar ridge concolorous with surrounding region; prescutellar depression brown; scutum faintly bivittate. Thoracic setae long, some longer than width of eye; acrostichal setulae lacking; 6 pairs dc; 1 pprn; 1 presut spal; 2 npl; 2 psut spal; 1 pal; 1 pair sctl, lacking setulae on disc; several setulae on notopleural depression and postpronotal lobe. Laterotergite with patch of pale setae; proepisternum with long pale setae, anepisternum with dark setulae along posterior margin; setae lacking on katepisternum.
Wing narrow, infuscate ( Fig. 16 View FIGURE 16 A); pterostigma very narrow, faint, parallel-sided or absent. Basal costal seta subequal to length of posterior dc. Row of setulae from base of R to tip of R1; cell dm produced apically; R4 and R5 parallel except for extreme apex. Halter brown with pale base.
Legs generally dark towards tips, with coxae and ventral surface of femora with blue pruinescence. Coxae with long, pale marginal setae. Fore femur ( Figs 17 View FIGURE 17 A, B) with 1–2 stout anterior setae in oblique row on apical third; anteroventral margin with row of stout setae of variable lengths, sometimes expanded into 2–3 rows on basal half of femur; posteroventral margin with row of 5–7 long, stout dark setae nearly subequal to width of femur on basal two-thirds; base of femur with row of 4–6 long, pale setae, some longer than width of femur. Fore tibia with biserial row of short, stout setae beneath. Mid and hind femora with several pairs of preapical antero- and posteroventral setae; lacking antero- and posterodorsal bristles. Hind tibia lacking posterodorsal and anterodorsal basal setae. Tarsus length longer than corresponding fore tibia, shorter than mid and hind tibiae. Empodium pulvilliform, slightly shorter than claw, longer than half length of tarsomere.
Hypandrium short, quadrate, slightly longer than epandrium ( Figs 3 View FIGURE 3 B, 4A, 9A). Phallus extended slightly beyond apex of clasping cercus, slightly arched at mid-length; apex with slender, arched anterior extension enclosing membrane, posterior extension expanded; ejaculatory apodeme strongly curved at basal third. Surstylus with narrow apical process bearing short microtrichia; anterior margin with tooth-like projections. Clasping cercus parallel-sided, slender, finger-like, bearing peg-like setae on inner dorsal margin; apex mostly truncate with tapered anteroapical corner.
Female. Similar to male except as follows: long, dark posteroventral setae of fore femur less stout, more widely separated, intermixed with short, stout setae, longer than width of femur ( Figs 18 View FIGURE 18 A, B). Posterior marginal setae of tergum 7 rather sparse and fine, evenly distributed, not shortened on dorsal surface; sternum 7 not emarginated posteriorly, with rather fine posterior marginal setae evenly distributed but somewhat sparser midventrally; tergum 8 with rather short, straight more or less stiff posterior marginal setae, sparser laterally than dorsally; sternum 8 not emarginated posteriorly, densely clothed with minute pile-like setulae, sparsely clothed with minute setulae on lateral surface; tergite 10 with 30–35 rather short, apically curved setae, setae along dorsal margin towards apex mostly stronger and only slightly tapered apically, setae on posterolateral and basal areas shorter and more slender, occasionally with several straight setae basally; sternite 10 with short setae as long as sternum ( Figs 12 View FIGURE 12 A–C).
Distribution. This species is known from the Japanese islands of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ), with adults collected from April to August.
