Symplectoscyphus liouvillei ( Billard, 1914)

( Fig. 12 View FIGURE 12 G)

Symplectoscyphus liouvillei— Peña Cantero, 2010a: 38 (synonymy); 2013: 134, fig. 4G, H.

Material examined. Stn 150, stem 170 mm high, with gonothecae (NIWA 117579).

Measurements (in µm). Hydrothecae: length abcauline wall 400–450, length free part of adcauline wall 220–250, length adnate part of adcauline wall 300–350, length adcauline wall 550–570, diameter at aperture 200–220, diameter at diaphragm 170–200, maximum diameter 230–250. Gonothecae (incomplete): height up to 2200, maximum diameter 425–450.

Ecology and distribution. Shelf species ( Peña Cantero 2010a), collected at depths from 65 ( Peña Cantero 2008) to 443 m (Peña Cantero 2006); present material at a depth of 461–480 m, with gonothecae in February.

Hitherto considered to have a West Antarctic-Patagonian distribution ( Peña Cantero et al. 2002). Recently reported off Low Island (Peña Cantero 2013). See Peña Cantero (2010a) for previous records. Present material is the first record from the Ross Sea and East Antarctica , collected off Moubray Bay, therefore the species has an Antarctic-Patagonian distribution.
