38. Dermacentor taiwanensis Sugimoto, 1935 View in CoL .
An Oriental species whose adults are usually found on Artiodactyla : Suidae ; nymphs and larvae have been collected from Carnivora : Mustelidae , Lagomorpha : Leporidae , and Rodentia : Muridae ; nymphs alone have been recovered from Carnivora : Canidae , and Rodentia : Sciuridae . This host profile differs from that of Dermacentor taiwanensis in Guglielmone et al. (2014) and is based on Apanaskevich and Apanaskevich (2015b), who found that Dermacentor taiwanensis has been extensively confused with Dermacentor bellulus . There are no bona fide records of Dermacentor taiwanensis feeding on humans, because the records from humans in Japan and Taiwan have been confused with those of Dermacentor bellulus , as discussed in Guglielmone and Robbins (2018).

Note: Apanaskevich and Apanaskevich (2015b) state that the figures of the female of Dermacentor taiwanensis in Wassef and Hoogstraal (1986a) represent bona fide specimens but that the text description includes morphological characters of both Dermacentor taiwanensis and Dermacentor bellulus ; nevertheless, these authors appear to cautiously support the description of the female in Wassef and Hoogstraal (1986a) as the first for Dermacentor taiwanensis . However, Sugimoto (1937a) redescribed the male and described the female of Dermacentor taiwanensis , while Apanaskevich and Apanaskevich (2015b) accept as correct the redescription of the male in Sugimoto (1937a) but ignore his description of the female of Dermacentor taiwanensis . There are no obvious grounds for declaring the female description in Sugimoto (1937a) invalid, or, for that matter, the redescriptions of the female of Dermacentor taiwanensis in Arthur (1960a) and Teng and Jiang (1991), although their diagnostic characters are not well depicted in these studies. See also Dermacentor bellulus for its confusion with Dermacentor taiwanensis .
