Genus Heteromurus Wankel, 1860 sensu Zhang et al. (2020)

Diagnosis. Colour pattern variable, ranging from unpigmented specimens to entirely dark specimens. Apically rounded or truncate scales present, as in other Heteromurini . Antennae five-segmented with Ant. I basally subdivided, proximal subarticle smaller than the distal one; Ant. IV annulated, Ant. III annulated or normal. Number of eyes variable, postantennal organ absent. Prelabral chaetae not bifurcate. Head dorsal macrochaetotaxy without A1, S2 and Ps2 mac. Trunk dorsal macrochaetotaxy reduced, Abd. I devoid of mac, Abd. III with one central mac, Abd. V with three sens. Unguis with a single outer tooth. Unguiculus lanceolate with a small outer tooth. Proximal dens without a sinuous ciliate mac, dental spines absent. Mucronal spine present or absent (adapted from Mari-Mutt 1980; Cipola et al. 2016; Zhang et al. 2020; Bellini et al. 2021).

Remarks. The genus diagnosis merges data from Heteromurus s. str. and the subgenus Verhoeffiella Absolon, 1900 , as presented by Zhang et al. (2020).
