Diagnosis. Female eyes bare, proximal flagellomeres spherical, AR 2.4, paratergite with 1 seta, scutellum with 6 bristles.

Description. Female. Eyes bare, broadly fused along the distance of 5 ommatidia. Flagellum uniformly brown, proximal flagellomeres spherical ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 L), AR 2.36–2.43. Palpus 5–segmented, PR 2.7–2.9. Mandible armed with about 30 small teeth. Scutum reddish brown with pale stripes, bases of scutal setae with dark spots. Scutellum yellow or brownish, bearing 6 bristles. Wing length 1.34–1.50 mm, CR 0.77, membrane with macrotrichia in all marginal cells, second radial cell 4.3 times longer than first ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 I). Halter pale. Legs yellow. Material examined. Male: Hokuto (Form.), H. Sauter XII 1912, cotypus, Atrichopogon ruber K., Atrichopogon ruber Kieff. Male: Taihoku, Distr. Maruyama XII.1912, Atrichopogon ruber K. Female: Chipun ( Formosa) H. Sauter VII 1912, Ƥ, Atrichopogon ruber K., Kieffer det. Female: Paróe, nördl. Paiwan- Distr. ( Formosa) H. Sauter X.1912, Atrichopogon ruber . Female: Paróe, nördl. Paiwan-Distr. ( Formosa) H. Sauter X.1912, Atrichopogon ruber var. Kieffer det.

Discussion. Types of A. ruber and A. formosanus which had been deposited in the Museum of Natural History in Budapest were destroyed in the 1956 fire. Two males and three females of A. ruber preserved in SDEI, examined here, identified and reported by Kieffer (1921 and 1922) from Taiwan do not belong to the type series. The preserved specimens have reddish bodies, as noted by Kieffer, agree well with the original descriptions of females of A. ruber and therefore provide evidence of A. formosanus being its junior synonym. New synonymy.
