Halechiniscus remanei antillensis n. ssp. ( Renaud-Mornant 1984b)

Terra typica : Atlantic Ocean ( Guadeloupe Island)

Atlantic Ocean:

• 27°57′N, 80°27′W: [FAO31] Undefined locality, USA, Florida State. Renaud-Mornant (1984b)

• 16°16′N, 61°31′W; 0 m bsl: [FAO31] Type Locality: Guadeloupe Island, Anse de la Gourde, intertidal to 70 cm below surface of sand, coral sand. Renaud-Mornant (1984b)

Caribbean Sea:

Record numbers (Sea/Ocean classification): Atlantic Ocean: 2, Caribbean Sea: 1; total: 3.

Record numbers (FAO classification): FAO31: 3; total: 3.

Remarks: This subspecies was described mainly based on differences in the morphology of caudal spine P4. Renaud-Mornant (1984b) showed an entire sequence of modifications in the shape of this spine in specimens of H. remanei from different regions of the world and suggested that this group is in the process of speciation (see also remarks for Halechiniscus r. remanei below). It is an intertidal and interstitial species found to 0–70 cm deep in sand. This subspecies was not covered in the key to Halechiniscus presented in Chang & Rho (2002).
