Pseudostygarctus rugosus n. sp. (D’Addabbo Gallo et al. 2001)

Terra typica: Adriatic Sea ( Italy, Europe)

Adriatic Sea:

• 42°06 ′ N, 15°29′E; 9 m bsl: [FAO37] Italy, Foggia Province, Tremiti Islands, southern area of San Domino Island, in the proximity of Punta Zio Cesare, submarine cave Grotta delle Viole, ca. 10 m from the cave’s entrance, sediments. D’Addabbo Gallo et al. (2001), Grimaldi de Zio et al. (2003)

• 42°06 ′ N, 15°29′E; 5 m bsl: [FAO37] Type Locality: Italy, Foggia Province, Tremiti Islands, southern area of San Domino Island, in the proximity of Punta Zio Cesare, submarine cave Grotta delle Viole, internal opening, sediments. D’Addabbo Gallo et al. (2001), Grimaldi de Zio et al. (2003)

Record numbers (Sea/Ocean classification): Adriatic Sea: 2; total: 2.

Record numbers (FAO classification): FAO37: 2; total: 2.

Remarks: This species is known from a single Adriatic locality in a marine cave. Based on this limited distribution and the absence of reports from the large number of studies in the Mediterranean basin, we suspect that this species has specific ecological requirements typical for troglobionts or deep sea species, but further studies are required to confirm this hypothesis (see remarks for P. mirabilis above).
