Cilliba cassidoidea (Hirschmann & Zirngiebl-Nicol)

Uropoda (Cilliba) cassidoidea Hirschmann & Zirngiebl-Nicol, 1964: 19 , Fig. 14 View FIGURES 11 – 16 ; Hirschmann & Zirngiebl-Nicol, 1965: 3; 1969a: 26; Hirschmann, 1979a: 21; Karg, 1989: 176; Wiśniewski, 1993a: 270; 1993b: 421; Wiśniewski & Hirschmann, 1993: 192.

Material examined. 2 ΨΨ, apparently syntypes, slide number 27/2, no other data ( BSCZ). Descriptions of male and deutonymph by Hirschmann & Zirngiebl-Nicol (1964, 1965).

Redescription. Female. Moderately sclerotised, colour yellow.

Dorsal idiosoma ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 17 – 21 ). Length ca 830 μm, width ca 715 µm. Dorsal shield subcircular, cuticle smooth, with characteristic ornamentation of numerous, deep circular pits over whole surface of shield. Marginal shield smooth, with undulate edge and numerous lyrifissures (id), completely separated from dorsal shield. Dorsal setae numerous, robust, long. Submarginal setae robust, marginal setae very numerous, long, robust, with curved ends.

Ve n t r a l idiosoma ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 17 – 21 ). Endopodal shields, sternal shield and anterior part of opisthosoma ornamented with small pits. Sternal setae st1 located close to anterior edge of epigynium, st2–st4 lateral to epigynium, st5 behind articulation of genital shield. Epigynium tongue-shaped, covered entirely with numerous small oval pits. Opisthosoma smooth, except region behind epigynium covered with pits. Ventral setae (v1–v5) simple, slightly widened, v1 = 2/3 length (v2–v5); v4 located on small mounds. Adanal setae Ad1 short, Ad2 = 2 x Ad1. Unpaired seta Pa = Ad1. Anal opening small, oval. Peritremes V-shaped. Tritosternum 6-branched, with broad base, laciniae with finely serrated tips.

Gnathosoma . Epistome narrow, laterally serrated, anterior processes finely spiculate ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 17 – 21 ). Hypostomal setae h1 long (ca 116 µm), simple; h2 short (ca 32 µm), robust; h3 short (ca 42 µm), simple; h4 short (ca 50 µm), robust, laterally serrated ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 17 – 21 ). Hypostomal surface covered with fine denticles of various sizes; denticles grouped in single row at the level of setae h2 and distributed irregularly between setae h3–h4. Hypostomal groove finely serrated. Ventral setae pv1–pv2 on palp trochanters robust and serrated; pv1 ca 82 µm long, pv2 ca 45 µm long. Chelicerae of average length, fixed digit with globular sensillus and small denticles on the internal surface, movable digit shorter than fixed digit, with single denticle on the internal surface ( Fig. 20 View FIGURES 17 – 21 ).

Male. Moderately sclerotised, colour yellow.

Dorsal idiosoma. Length ca 780 µm, width ca 715 µm. Ornamentation and chaetotaxy as for female.

Ve n t r a l idiosoma ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 22 – 27 ). Sternal shield and anterior part of opisthosoma ornamented with circular pits of moderate size. Operculum oval, with a pair of long eugenital setae. Sternal setae simple, short. One pair of glands located near setae st3. Ornamentation and chaetotaxy of opisthosoma and peritremes as for female.

Gnathosoma ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 22 – 27 ). Epistome as for female. Hypostomal setae h1 long, simple; h2 very short, simple; h3 short, simple; h4 not present.

Legs. Structure and chaetotaxy as for female, except setae av on genu and tibia II and two ventral setae on tarsus II more robust than in female ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES 22 – 27 ).

Deutonymph. Partly sclerotised, colour yellow.

Dorsal idiosoma ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 22 – 27 ). Length ca 700 µm, width ca 590 µm. Dorsal shield subcircular, cuticle smooth, ornamented with small oval pits; marginal shield absent. Anterior end of idiosoma with single cuticular process. Dorsal setae numerous, simple, some of them accompanied by circular pores, all setae on dorsal side widened at the base. Between the setae ca 6 pairs of dorsal lyrifissures (id). Submarginal setae located on small tubercles. Marginal setae very numerous, hook-like, longer than submarginals.

Ve n t r a l idiosoma ( Fig. 26 View FIGURES 22 – 27 ). Sternal shield amphora-shaped, with narrow base, entirely covered by oval pits, extending behind coxae IV. Sternal setae (st1–st5) short, with widened bases. Two pairs of lyrifissures, iv1 near camerostome, iv2 behind setae st5. Ventral shield wide, smooth, ventral setae simple, with widened bases; all setae of equal length. One pair of lyrifissures (iv3) located near setae v2. Anal shield triangular, with anal opening covered by a small valve and a pair of very short setae Ad1. Setae Ad2 and Pa on shield surrounding the anus, Ad2 = Pa. Peritreme long, with characteristic curve at level of coxae II, without poststigmatic extension, prestigmatic section reaching camerostome, stigmata at level of coxae III. Tritosternum 6-branched, with broad base ( Fig. 27 View FIGURES 22 – 27 ).

Gnathosoma . Epistome narrow and serrated, distally bifid. Structure and chaetotaxy of hypostome and palp trochanters similar to female except setae h2 and h3 serrated.

Protonymph and larva. Unknown.

Ecology. Hirschmann & Zirngiebl-Nicol (1969a) recorded this species from Spain, in the litter of oakchestnut forest ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ), and it has not been collected since.
