Distribution. Romania: Apuseni Mts.: cave 1 Mai near Scărişoara, caves Lumea pierdută, Ponorului and Neagră near Padiş (original localities!); cave Pojarul Politei in Bihorului Mt. ( Strasser 1962).

Remarks. This species was originally described in a new genus of Blaniulidae— Spelaeoblaniulus . Strasser (1962) transferred the species to the correct family, downgrading Spelaeblaniulus to a new subgenus of Typhloiulus and incorrectly renaming it Spelaeoiulus on the ground that ”The original name had to be changed, as it would have otherwise been misleading”. In their description of T. motasi, Tabacaru & Gava (1992) noted that the new species shared a number of morphological similarities with T. serbani . The two of them seem to occupy an isolated position within Typhloiulus , considering the very unusual conformation of the opisthomere (see also Discussion). This is one of the few Typhloiulus species in which the mouthparts are modified for a presumed semiaquatic lifestyle, the others being T. ausugi and T. edentulus ( Enghoff 1985) .
