Type species here designated: Tapiena minor Bolívar, 1906 View in CoL , Mem. Soc. espan. Hist. nat. 1: 334;

type locality: Ghana, Ashanti; depository: MNCN, Madrid (♀ syntype; cf. Paris 1994) .

Description. Small-sized, green. Antennae thin. Fastigium of vertex about 1.5 times as wide as scapus of antenna; fastigium verticis meeting fastigium of frons along a horizontal line; face smooth ( Fig. 9c View FIGURE 9 ); eyes round. Pronotum higher than long, with evident lateral carinae ( Fig. 10f View FIGURE 10 ), flat and dotted disc, anterior margin incurved, posterior margin rounded. Both pairs of wings fully developed; tegmina rounded at tips, narrow ( Fig. 9c View FIGURE 9 ). Fore coxa armed. Femora inferiorly spined. Fore tibiae with conchate tympanum on inner side and open tympanum on outer side. Three sclerotized spurs on each side of hind femora. Ovipositor curving sharply upwards, with dorsal valve denticulate, ventral valve pointed and apically denticulate.

Etymology. The name Afrotapiena means African Tapiena .

Distribution. Presently it has been recorded only from Ghana ( Bolívar 1906, Naskrecki 2008), and only the female sex is known.
