status

Sarcophaga Swinderen, 1822: 86 View in CoL .

TYPE SPECIES: Musca vomitoria Linnaeus, 1758 , by monotypy .

CURRENT STATUS: nomen oblitum; senior (but invalid) synonym of Sarcophaga Meigen, 1824 ( Evenhuis & Pape 2019: 104).

FAMILY: CALLIPHORIDAE .

REMARKS: Swinderen’s descriptive words used for Sarcophaga Swinderen, 1822 , “Vleescheter” [Flesh eater], is construed here as enough to make the name available as a behavioral character trait. Additionally, the inclusion of a single available specific name ( vomitoria ) [= Musca vomitoria Linnaeus, 1758 ] makes the genus-group name available by including a specific name that can be unambiguously assigned to a nominal species-group taxon (ICZN Code Art. 12.2.5). Sarcophaga Swinderen, 1822 [ Calliphoridae ] is a senior homonym of Sarcophaga Meigen, 1824 [ Sarcophagidae ] and the acceptance of its priority would have profound implications to the stability and nomenclature of species currently treated in Sarcophaga Meigen, 1824 and the family Sarcophagidae as currently accepted. Because the Swinderen name had not been used since 1899, Evenhuis & Pape (2019: 104) declared Sarcophaga Swinderen, 1822 a nomen oblitum and both generic names Sarcophaga Meigen 1824 and Calliphora Robineau- Desvoidy, 1830 nomina protecta.

[Thericas] Swinderen, 1822: 87.

INCLUDED SPECIES: Thericas minuta Swinderen, 1822 (nomen nudum).

CURRENT STATUS: nomen nudum; unplaced in Diptera .

FAMILY: UNKNOWN.

REMARKS: There are no characters given for the generic name and the description of the only included nominal species ( minuta ) as “de Kleine” [= the small] is deemed here to not be enough to make the name available. I therefore treat both the generic and species names as nomina nuda and unplaced in Diptera .

Titania Swinderen, 1822: 87 View in CoL .

TYPE SPECIES: Titania albipennis Swinderen, 1822 , by monotypy .

CURRENT STATUS: preoccupied by Titania Meigen, 1800 ; nomen dubium; unplaced in Diptera .

FAMILY: UNKNOWN.

REMARKS: No characters were given for the genus-group name, but Swinderen’s descriptive words for the only included nominal species, albipennis , “de Witvleugel” [= the white wing], is considered here as enough to make the species name available and thus, by inclusion of an available specific name, the generic name as well. The generic name is preoccupied by Titania Meigen, 1800 . The I.C.Z.N. (1955: 421 [Opinion 348]) ruled to suppress Titania Meigen for the purposes of Priority but not for the Purpose of Homonymy in order to conserve Chlorops Meigen, 1803 . No new replacement name is proposed for the generic name. The species is treated here as a nomen dubium and unplaced in Diptera .
