Syncomistes butleri is usually found in low numbers. Prior to the study by Morgan et al. (2006), the species was only known from the Drysdale, Pentecost and Ord River systems ( Fig. 33). Thus, the range was extended to the west to include the Carson River, where 16 individuals were captured at five sites, highlighting the low abundance of the species.
