Tribe Mallodonini Thomson, 1861 View in CoL
The tribe Mallodonini is composed of nine genera and 42 species ( Tavakilian & Chevillotte 2018). Immature stages of five species belonging to three genera are already described: larva and pupa of Hovorodon maxillosum (Drury, 1773) , described by Duffy (1960); larva and pupa of Mallodon dasystomum (Say, 1824) described by Craighead (1915), and redescribed by Duffy (1960); larva of Mallodon spinibarbe (Linnaeus, 1758) , briefly described by Heller (1904), and redescribed by Duffy (1960); Zajciw (1976) redescribed the larva and described the pupa of this latter species; and the larvae of two species of Stenodontes Audinet-Serville, 1832 , described by Duffy (1960): S. chevrolati Gahan, 1890 , and S. damicornis (Linnaeus, 1771) .
Based on the descriptions of these species, the larvae of Mallodonini are characterized by having the following: epistomal margin heavily sclerotized, projected above clypeal base and additional carina above epistoma; upper boundary with margin broadly notched medially and produced beyond lower boundary in two paramedian lobes, except Mallodon spinibarbe , straight; lower boundary projecting above clypeus, with one broadly triangular lobe lacking in Mallodon spinibarbe ; antennae with two antennomeres; three pairs of stemmata; legs: 3-segmented, with tibiotarsus imbricately spinose; abdomen with ambulatory ampullae dorsally and ventrally; dorsal ampullae, each with two distinct transverse lobes, feebly rugose and glabrous; ventral ampullae, each with one impression; anus trilobate.
The pupae of three species are known. Based on these descriptions, the pupa of Mallodonini is characterized by having the following: head visible from above, glabrous; pronotum with sides nearly parallel; tergites with paired paramedian gin-traps on abdominal segments II–III, III–IV, IV–V, V–VI and VI–VII (last reduced); posterior plate of each gin-trap not dentate or crenulate along front margin; tergites of abdomen with microspines; segment IX unarmed (without urogomphi); functional spiracles on abdominal segments I–VI.
