1. Campylopus Brid. View in CoL Musc. Rec. Suppl. 4 (Mant. Musc.): 71. 1819.

Variously coloured plants, usually growing in mats or cushions. Stems often tomentose, simple or sparingly branched, equally or interruptedly. Stems foliate. Leaves lanceolate or filiform. Costa broad and strong, often excurrent, showing in cross-section 2, one or no bands of stereids. Alar cells usually very conspicuous, brown. Cells quadrate, rhomboid or elongate, basal cells sometimes with thickened, pitted walls. Capsules often more than one from a perichaetium, seta often arcuate, cygneous when moist. Peristome teeth forked, finely vertically striate in lower part. Calyptra sometimes fringed at base.

Type species: C. flexuosus (Hedw.) Brid. ( Dicranum flexuosum Hedw. ; lectotype according to Britton, Fl Bermuda 433. 1918)

1 a. Basal cells, just above the auricles, with thickened, pitted walls.

b. Basal cells with thin, not pitted walls. 2

2 a. Costa in cross-section with a dorsal layer of stereids only, ventral layer of very wide cells. Robust plants with leaves 8-13 mm long. 1. C. praealtus

b. Costa in cross-section with a dorsal and a ventral layer of stereids. Plants smaller, leaves not more than 9 mm long. 3

3 a. Upper cells, a short distance below apex, with distinctly pitted walls. 2. C. atratus

b. Cells below apex with smooth walls. 4

4 a. Margin of leaves distantly serrate near apex only; the excurrent part of costa toothed or smooth; cells in upper 1/3 of leaf irregular (quadrate, rhomboid or elongate) average shorter than 18 µ. 3. C. arctocarpus

b. Margin of leaves strongly serrate halfway down, apex strongly serrate all around; cells in upper 1/3 elongate, average longer than 18 µ. 4. C. harrisii

5 a. Leaves up to 4 mm long. 5. C. surinamensis

b. Leaves (usually much) longer than 4 mm 6.

6 a. Stems interruptedly foliate. 7

b. Stems equally foliate. 6. C. savannarum

7 a. Leaves up to 15 mm long, costa without lamellae on back. 7. C. nanofilifolius

b. Leaves up to 8 mm long, costa with very prominent lamellae on back. 8. C. trachyblepharon
