Habitat in Europae arboribus cavis, frequentius culta.
Regina (Femina) unica, altior, oblongior, aculeata. Fuci (Mares) ad 1600, inermes, antennis 11- articulatis. Operariae (Spadones) ad 20000, antennis 15- articulatis, ventriculis 2 mellis ceraeque, aculeatae Ense retrorsum serrato venenato latente intra vaginam cuspidatam.
Respublica Alvearii gynaecocratica est, dum Femina imperans semper inclusa, operariorum custodum satellitio assidue stipata, antennis obvium Marem quemcunque salutat, insiliendoque comprimit cum illius vitae dispendio; ponit dein ova ad 40000 saepe quotannis in adaptatis favi cellis: primum neutra, dein mascula, demum nonnulla feminina; his exclusis gradu 2:do supra calorem aestatis ordinariae, adolescunt Larvae sextiduo, nent ad parietes cellae, operiuntur usque dum adultae evolant, alteroque die mellificant. Mares, ignavum pecus, incurii apricantur serenis diebus, gulae dediti. Spadones operarii, neutri, indefessi, mel e nectare, ceram e polline florum sedulo legunt 1/4 milliaris spatio, quoties per coelum licet, reducunt, favos cereos struunt sexangulari-prismaticos, eosque melle replent, feminam mares pullosque nutriunt, cellas inhabitatas repurgant, immunda auferunt, vigilias & stationes ad portas instituunt, hostes arcent aculei ictu venenato sibi ipsis licet lethali, maresque demum transactis nuptiis expellunt. Hostes imprimis sunt Motacillae, Hirundines, Pavones, Bufones, Mures, Crabrones, Vespae, Pediculi, Apes fures, Mellonellae, Fumus & c. Flores melliferi, non omnes, praecipui sunt Echium, Borago, Verbascum, Serpyllum alii; imprimis Erica Svecis, Fagopyrum Scanis, Tilia Polonis, Rosmarinus Narbonensibus, Thymus Atticis, Arbutus Corsicis, Absinthium Sardinis, Aconitum Ponticis & c. hinc pretium varium mellis: Vide Reaumurium, Aubenton.
