III. Tritomini : Xestus Wollaston

Concern discovered. Tribal placement of Xestus .

Discussion and results. In all historic catalogs ( Chapuis 1876: 39; Crotch 1876: 99; Gemminger and Harold 1876: 3696; Kuhnt 1909: 92, 1911: 68; Winkler 1926: 717), the unusual genus Xestus Wollaston, 1864: 420 , from the Canary Islands was placed in the Tritomini or among tritomine genera. The more recent African and Old-World catalogs of Delkeskamp (1981) and Chûjô and Chûjô (1988, 1989, 1990) did not include Xestus . Recently, Wegrzynowicz (2007) in the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera placed Xestus in the Dacnini . No literature was found to explain the transfer. Materials studied of Xestus possess character states (body shape, pseudotetramerous tarsi, dilated terminal palpomeres, etc.; Figure 7 View Figure 7 ) that are typical of the Tritomini , not the Dacnini . In lieu of further studies, Xestus is moved back into the Tritomini .
