Description
Female. Size: 4 mm. Fully described by Sars (1895).
Male (sexually dimorphic characters). Size: up to 4 mm. Head without distinct spine on dorsolateral margins. Antenna 1 with tufts of long, fine setae on peduncular articles 1 and 3 and flagellar article 1, article 1 of flagellum elongate, flagellum with five articles, accessory flagellum with four articles. Antenna 2 with tufts of fine long setae on peduncular articles 3–4, flagellum with six articles. Coxa 1–3 with spines. Gnathopods 1 and 2 with an elongate, very narrow propodus, gnathopod 1 without robust seta defining palm. All appendages less setose than female. Pereopod 7 basis with six to seven indistinct spines, each with small associated marginal seta. Urosomites narrow, urosomal segment 2 with small elevation anterior to insertion of telson. Epimeron 3 posterodistal corner with small spine, without row of oblique setae. Uropod 3 rami elongate, outer ramus article 2 about half length of article 1, without apical seta; inner ramus as long as article 2 of outer ramus, without apical seta.
Distribution North Sea, North-East Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea.
Discussion
Harpinia antennaria , H. dellavallei and H. serrata also possess a spine on epimeron 3. Of these, only H. dellavallei possesses posterodistal spines on coxae 1–3, similarly to H. pectinata . Females of H. pectinata can be readily distinguished from those of H. dellavallei by the presence of an oblique row of setae on epimeron 3 and the lack of long marginal setae on the basis of peropod 7. In males, the narrow propodus of gnathopods 1 and 2 and the lack of a robust seta on the propodus of gnathopod 1 are similar only to H. antennaria (although the male of H. dellavallei is unknown and may also possess this). Harpinia pectinata males are distinguished from those of H. antennaria primarily by the presence of posterodistal spines on coxae 1–3.
