Recognition. This species of Clinocera is readily distinguished by the presence of an auxiliary crossvein between R 2+3 and R 4, lower half of face with silvery pruinescence and a dark ring around the anterior spiracle ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 2–5 ).
Distribution. A Holarctic species distributed across the subarctic and arctic areas of Eurasia and North America ( Sinclair 2008). In Russia, C. nivalis is known from Murmanskaya Province, Novaya Zemlya, north of Yakutia, Chukotka and Wrangel Island.
Habitat. On Wrangel Island, this species was collected in various wet habitats.
