Mobula mobular ( Bonnaterre 1788)

Giant Devilray

Raia mobular Bonnaterre, 1788: 5 . No types known. Type locality: Montredon , near Marseille, France, Mediterranean Sea.

Local synonymy: White et al., 2018: 290, figs (PNG).

PNG voucher material: None.

Remarks: No confirmed PNG specimens recorded, but recorded in the bycatch of the purse seine fishery. It is one of the most abundant devilrays in pelagic fisheries in tropical Western Central Pacific waters, thus its presence in PNG is very likely. Previously thought to be restricted to the Mediterranean Sea, White et al. (2017b) found that M. japanica (Müller & Henle, 1841) was conspecific, thus a circumglobal species.
