Caliothrips insularis (Hood) View in CoL

( Figs 8 View FIGURES 1–15 , 21 View FIGURES 16–21 )

Body color yellow. Antennal segment III with setae much shorter than the length of the segment ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 1–15 ). Dorsal setae with apex expanded about 2x wider than setal base ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 16–21 ). Head setae D1 inserted posteriorly to setae D4. Pronotum with no sclerotized blotch. Abdominal tergite II lacking spiracles; segment X with six anal setae shorter than the segment length. Similar to C. phaseoli , this species can be distinguished by the characters in the key. It is also similar to C. fasciatus , judging from specimens deposited in USNM, and additional examination is required to explore possible characters to distinguish these species. Caliothrips insularis breeds on grasses, from which larvae have been collected in the state of Piauí, Brazil (CHNUFPI).
