Centris (Hemisiella) tarsata Smith, 1874 View in CoL
( Figures 15–18 View FIGURES 15 – 18 , 28 View FIGURE 28 )
Centris tarsata Smith, 1874: 371 View in CoL , 372.
Diagnosis. Both sexes with yellow greenish pilosity on head and mesosoma, lighter on metasonal ventral surface; clypeal disc areolate. Female: Tibial scopa with long, whitish and mostly simple hairs. Male hind basitarsus without a spine-like projection on the posterior surface. C. tarsata is similar to C. trigonoides . Both sexes differ by the hairs on mesosoma (yellow greenish in C. tarsata ; yellow in C. trigonoides ). The males differ by the presence of the tooth-like projection on the posterior surface of hind basitarsus (absent in C. tarsata ; present in C. trigonoides ) and by the pilosity on the posterior surface of the hind tibia (whitish in C. tarsata ; brown or yellow in C. trigonoides ). Females differ by the surface of clypeal disc (areolate, without longitudinal carina in C. tarsata ; not areolate and with a longitudinal carina in C. trigonoides ), and by the pubescence surrounding the basitibial plate (mostly whitish and simple in C. tarsata ; yellow and plumose in C. trigonoides ).
Morphology. Female ( Figs. 15, 16 View FIGURES 15 – 18 ). Measurements: Approximate body length: 12.1; head width: 4.8; thorax width: 5.0; forewing length: 10.2; UID: 2.4; LID: 2.2; mandible length: 1.6; basal mandibular width: 0.7; labrum length: 0.7; labrum width: 1.2; F1 length: 0.8; F2 length: 0.2; F3 length: 0.3; scape length: 0.6; diameter of the median ocellus: 0.3; distance between the lateral ocellus and the eye: 0.6. Coloration: Head blackish, mesosoma and legs dark brown. Mandible, labrum, lower paraocular area and base of mid and fore tibiae yellow. Clypeus with two ellipsoidal yellow spots. Anterior surface of antennal flagellum brown. Tegula brown with yellow edges. Metasoma brown reddish. Terga with slightly translucent apical bands. Wing membranes yellowish with veins brown. Sculpture: Clypeus strongly areolate with coarse and relatively dense punctation. Labrum areolate, labral punctation denser than on clypeus. T2 with fine and very dense punctation, denser on T3 and T4. T5 with coarse and not very dense punctures, sparser than on previous terga. Pubescence: Head and mesosoma with yellow greenish pilosity, lighter on metasomal ventral surface. Vertex and upper paraocular area with dark brown hairs. Gena and T1 with whitish pubescence. Legs with yellowish pubescence. Scopa of hind tibiae with long, whitish and mostly simple hairs. Inner surface of hind leg with dark brown pubescence. T2–T4 with short, dark brown hairs. T5 with long, whitish and simple pilosity. Apical bands of sterna with whitish pubescence, darker on distal segments. Structures: Mandible with three teeth with acute apex (1st>3rd>2nd). Second tooth almost fused with rutellum. Trimal angle acute. Acetabular carina reaching base of third tooth. Clypeal disc flat (in lateral view). Labrum semicircular. Inner orbits of compound eyes diverging above. Vertex slightly below upper ocular tangent. Secondary anterior comb of fore elaiospathe formed by three giant apically curved hairs. Pretarsal claws with small preapical tooth, absent in hind leg.
Male ( Figs. 17, 18 View FIGURES 15 – 18 ). Measurements: Approximate body length: 12.0; head width: 4.6; thorax width: 5.2; forewing length: 11.1; UID: 1.9; LID: 1.9; mandible length: 1.4; basal mandibular width: 0.7; labrum length: 0.7; labrum width: 1.2; F1 length: 0.8; F2 length: 0.2; F3 length: 0.4; scape length: 0.4; diameter of the median ocellus: 0.3; distance between the lateral ocellus and the eye: 0.4. Coloration: Head blackish and mesosoma dark brown. Fore and middle legs brownish. Hind leg light brown (except yellowish tibia). Mandible (mainly), labrum, lower paraocular area, and base of mid and fore tibiae yellow. Clypeus yellow with dark brown spot on upper edge. Anterior surface of antennal flagellum brown. Tegula light brown, translucent. Metasoma light brown, slightly orange in some specimens. Terga with translucent apical bands. Wing membranes yellowish with veins brown. Sculpture: Clypeus strongly areolate with coarse, dense punctation. Labrum areolate, labral punctation denser and more uniform than on clypeus. T2 with fine and very dense punctation, denser on T3 and T4. T5 with coarse and sparser punctures than on previous terga. Pubescence: Head and mesosoma with yellow greenish pilosity, lighter on ventral surface. Vertex with dark brown hairs. Gena, hind tibiae (mainly) and T1 with whitish pubescence. Fore and middle legs with light yellow to whitish hairs. Hind basitarsus with dark brown pubescence. T2–T4 with short, dark brown hairs. T5 with long and brown hairs on disc, whitish at distal edge. T6 and sterna with whitish, plumose and long pubescence. Structures: Mandible with three teeth (1st>2nd≥3rd) with acute apex. Trimal angle acute. Acetabular carina reaching base of third tooth. Clypeal disc relatively flat (lateral view). Labrum semicircular. Inner orbits of compound eyes diverging above. Vertex slightly below upper ocular tangent. Hind femur welldeveloped. Hind basitarsus without spine-like projection on posterior surface.
Floral record. Hypericaceae .
Comment. In some males of C. tarsata the coloration of the metasoma is slightly orange instead of light brown.
