Type material. Holotype ♂: New Zealand, Stewart Is., SI, Murray Beach , 46.7888°N, 168.0017°E, NZMG5368450 N 2128220E, 19/i/2000, RKD [ NZAC] . Paratype: 1♂, SI, Stewart Is., Christmas Village Hut, 46.7449°N, 167.9745°E, NZMG5373190 N 212584E, 18/i/2000, RKD [ NMWC] .

Etymology: Rakiura is the Maori name for the type locality of the species.

Description. Male: length 2.5mm (wet specimen).

Head: black, dusted grey; rather quadrate but slightly dorsoventrally flattened, ocelli mid way between antennae and vertex, eyes almost touching for a short distance on frons, lower face slightly but distinctly produced at edge of mouth; setae black, ocl short but strong, similar length as verticals; upo contiguous with and similar strength as vt2, becoming smaller below; lpo very weak, lower occiput with very minute pale pile in front and a cluster of distinct black setae on either side posteriorly. Antennae ( Fig. 109 ) yellow, darker on postpedicel apically; scape 2X as long as wide, a distinct seta dorsally; postpedicel 7X as long as wide, evenly pointed, arista bare, less than 0.1X as long. Proboscis black, shorter than head is deep; labellum yellow; palpi small with long subapical bristle.

Thorax: dark reddish brown, rather long, katepisternum almost linear below in profile (not strongly curved behind coxal insertion); dc1 absent; dc2 and dc3 equally strong; dc4 and dc5 absent; ph well developed, almost as strong as pprn; sa very strong; anatergite with 4–5 bristles arranged vertically in linear series.

Legs: brownish yellow, apical 2 tarsal segments blackish, segments 2 and 3 white. C 1 short, 0.6X length of thorax, slightly inflated, 4X as long as wide, a line of bristly hairs in front becoming smaller and multiserial distally. F 1 1.3X as long as C 1; moderately inflated, 4.5X as long as wide; 3 very strong av spines in basal 0.3 almost in line with a series of about 17 much smaller bristles which are denticle-like distally, becoming slightly larger, blunter and peg-like basally; pv series of hair-like spines longest basally. T 1 0.95X as long as F 1, linear, hardly geniculate basally, a linear series of about 28 minute adpressed denticles ventrally. C 2 and C 3 with anteroapical fan of black bristles. Legs otherwise simple with only fine hairs and bristles; at2 0.7X as long as at3.

Wing: with membrane slightly darkened, veins brown; venation simple, cell cup open, vein A 1 completely absent, CuA 2 present as a short stub; Sc virtually reaching costa, fading only at extreme apex; costal bristle strong.

Abdomen: uniformly dark reddish brown, tergites with black bristly hairs on disc and margins, strongest on tergite 6 posteriorly. Terminalia ( Fig. 56 ) small, reflexed upwards; hypandrium and epandrium not fused; epandrium bilaterally divided, each lobe small with strong setae apically and on posterior margin; hypandrium rather small, a pair of very strong setae posteroapically; subepandrial process very large (emerging well beyond epandrial lobe in lateral view), strongly curved, apex reaching almost to tip of phallus; cerci free, very large, bearing very strong setae; phallus long, gently sinuous, not strongly curved.

Female: unknown.

Comments. C. rakiuraensis is a dark reddish brown species in the C. trepida -group with C 1 very short, dc3 present, elongated antennae and katepisternum almost linear in profile. It is only known from forest sites on Stewart Island in January.
