Etymology: from the Latin corniger meaning ‘horned.

Description. Male: length = 3.5–4.5mm.

Head: black, grey-dusted with face paler; verticals, ocl, upo and lpo similar to C. longicornis .

Antenna: ( Fig. 98 View FIGURES 91–103 ) with scape short cylindrical, rather longer than wide with short terminal setae; pedicel globular, apical circlet of fine setae longest on outer and ventral sides; postpedicel long-pubescent, greatly enlarged, tapering rather gradually to a blunt point, about 10X as long as wide with distinct arista about 0.15X as long. Palpi yellow with pale and dark setae; labellum and proboscis darker; labium with posterior fringe of setae black.

Thorax: (Figs. 80, 89, 90) darker than C. longicornis but variable; ground colour ( Fig. 89 View FIGURES 82–90 ) difficult to see in dry specimens owing to intensity of dusting; mesonotum black, dirty yellow on sides above and behind pprnlb. Pleura dusky yellowish to blackish with dark stripes less clearly defined than in C. longicornis , in par- ticular dark stripe between pprnlb and base of wing poorly resolved from that between prothoracic spiracle and base of haltere; yellowish area running from prothoracic ‘collar’ across upper katepisternum and meron usually fairly sharply defined from lower dark stripe which passes from side of pst over lower part of katepisternum and meron. Dusting pattern strongly defined ( Fig. 90 View FIGURES 82–90 ), similar to C. longicornis . Mesonotum intensely grey, a pair of undusted black submedian stripes in front, a median stripe behind and a lateral stripe at sides between base of wing and just above pprnlb all strongly defined; a narrow median stripe in front along line of acr usually present. Pleura with three undusted black stripes roughly following line of black ground colour, intervening dusky yellow ground areas largely obscured by heavy greyish white dusting such that dry specimens appear strongly black and white striped on side of thorax. Mesonotal setae strong but strength, position and symmetry rather variable; dc2 and dc3 strong, dc1 about 0.6X as long as dc2; dc4 and dc5 usually fine but dc4 sometimes as strong as dc1 and sometimes minute supernumerary dc setae on prescutellar depression; acr irregularly biserial, distinct but fine; np1, np2, pprn, and sa setae well developed of similar strength to strongest dc; ph almost as strong as pa with 2–4 much finer hairs in line in front and behind. A pair of apical sct, sometimes smaller subapical sct also present. Postnotum dorsally and pst laterally with a few fine hairs; anatergite with 5–9 black setae.

Legs: colour variable but front legs usually conspicuously darkened. C 1 dark brown, a black stripe anteriorly; F 1 slightly paler, sometimes only darkened posteriorly; T 1 and base of at1 yellow, contrasting with dark distal tarsal segments. Mid and hind legs brownish yellow with darker tarsi. C 1 about 1.1X as long as thorax, slightly longer than F 1 with short dark hairs and longer apical bristles, no strong bristles on outer face. C 1 and C 3 with yellowish-brown anteroapical bristles, no strong bristles on outer face. F 1 strongly inflated ventrally, widest 0.4–0.5 from base where 0.25X as wide as long; femoral formula 5(4–5)/16(14–19)/11(9–12)/4(4–6) the double rows of spines and denticles starting 0.3 from base; a strong ventral bristle <0.2 from base; otherwise short-haired with some longer apical bristles. T 1 0.6–0.7X as long as F 1, with linear series of black adpressed denticles, a row of short outstanding hairs behind denticles and behind that a very inconspicuous series of 8–10 perpendicular cilia. Front tarsi with at1 4–5X as long as at2, rather erect hairs below and a ventral series of about 15 minute brownish denticles; all segments with very sparse perpendicular ciliation dorsally and ventrally. Mid and hind legs slender, pv bristle 0.7 from base of F 2 strong, black, almost as long as F 2 wide and often with a few weaker pv bristles nearby. Mid and posterior tarsi rather long haired below, particularly on pt1, perpendicular ciliation extremely sparse.

Wing: clear, stigma absent, veins yellowish-brown to blackish; about 3.2X as long as broad; Sc distinctly evanescent; R 2+3 gently curved towards C apically and ending slightly basad of M 1; R 4+5 ending at tip of wing; discal cell about 5X as long as wide, First vein (M 1) from cell dm same length or slightly shorter than dm and slightly more than 2X length of third vein (CuA 1) beyond end of dm; basal cells narrow; cell cup absent with CuA 2 strong, evenly curved. Vein A 1 represented by a short faintly pigmented area forming a right angle with the end of CuA 2 and extending significantly no more than the length of CuA 2. Costal bristle fine, dark. Squamae with dark fringes. Haltere yellowish-white.

Abdomen: blackish dorsally, paler ventrally; tergites with dark marginal setae strongest on segments 1 and 6; sternites with only weak pale hairs. Male genitalia ( Figs. 23–25 View FIGURES 23–28 ) very similar to C. longicornis . Epandrium narrow, apically rounded bearing conspicuous long setae posteroapically and apically rather shorter than in C. longicornis ; hypandrium with a pair of conspicuous dark setae posteriorly, shorter than epandrial lobes and with a few smaller setae below cercus bearing fine setae apically and on inner face; Postgonite ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 23–28 ) with an apical lobe bearing two parallel setae and a rather palmate median lobe armed with 3–4 distinct fine setae.

Description. Female: similar to male, differing as follows.

Head: with postpedicel ( Fig. 97 View FIGURES 91–103 ) shorter, 5–6X as long as wide, arista 0.5X as long as segment; apical hairs on basal segments rather longer.

Legs: paler, yellowish to brownish, rather darker behind sometimes and on mid and hind legs; apical tarsal segments blackish.

F 1 more inflated, 0.25–0.3X as wide as long; femoral formula 5(4–6)/19(15–21)/13(11–16)/5(4–6).

Abdomen: with marginal setae strongest on tergite 1 becoming weaker on distal segment.

Comments. C. cornigera is in the C. consignata -group, distinguished by having thoracic markings very obscure in wet specimens (although a distinct black and white striped dusting pattern is evident in dry specimens), postpedicel moderately short and dc1 shorter than dc2. C. cornigera is very similar to C. longicornis and C. puhihiroa (see comments under C. longicornis ). The double row of spines and denticles on F 1 starts closer to base and the male has a strong ventral spine, also rather basally situated. T 1 is rather longer than in C. longicornis . All known localities for this species are between 650–1000m elevation in the Southern Alps, at forest sites dominated by the mountain beech Nothofagus solandri var. cliffortioides with capture dates from November to January inclusive.
