Chorthophila pudica Rondani, 1866 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1866a: 161 (key), 173 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Pedemontio [Piedmont ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: not found in this study.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Botanophila fugax ( Meigen, 1826) View in CoL ( Dely-Draskovits 1993: 25, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 5).

REMARKS: Rondani (1866a: 173) described Chorthophila pudica from just the male sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length: “ Foeminam non vidi . Mas tantum a me observatus in Pedemontio inventus ab eq. Truqui [I did not observe the female. I only observed the male from Piedmont, found by Mr. Truqui]”. We were unable to locate any type material of this nominal species in our study. Hennig (1970a: 370) reported one male from Parma and two females in the MZUF and incorrectly considered them as belonging to the type series. We do not consider the single male from “Parma” that we found in the MZUF to be a type because it is not from the type locality. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name Chorthophila , which is an “unjustified emendation of Chortophila Macquart, 1835 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 57).
