Phtyria barbata Rondani, 1863 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 65.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Chiliae [ Chile]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 specimen, holotype (sex not determinable, completely covered with mold) ( MZUN: Box Bombilidei B 03, 03): Phtyria barbata Phil. , Chili [= Chile] / M. Zool. N° 11105 .

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Phthiria chilena Rondani, 1863 View in CoL ( Evenhuis & Greathead 1999: 25, 2015: 26).

REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 65) described Phtyria barbata , without specifying either the number or the sex of the specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material received from R.A. Philippi, to whom he attributed the species name. Costa (1866: 37) listed a single MZUN specimen (as Phthiria barbata Phil. ) numbered “854”. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name Phtyria , which is an “unjustified emendation of Phthiria Meigen, 1803 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 144). Evenhuis & Greathead (1999: 25) reported the specimen in the MZUN to be a holotype.
