Pangonia laterina Rondani, 1851 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1851: 370.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ regioni equatoriali dell’America, principalmente nelle vicinanze del Rio Napo ” [ Equatorial regions of ( South ) America, mainly in the vicinity of Napo River] ( Rondani 1851: 357) .

TYPE MATERIAL: not found in this study.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, unplaced to genus of Tabanidae ( Fairchild 1971: 107) View in CoL ; valid species, as Fidena laterina ( Coscarón & Papavero 2009: 39) View in CoL .

REMARKS: Rondani (1851: 370) described Pangonia laterina , without specifying the number or the sex of the specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material collected by Osculati (1850) during his journey through equatorial South America. Osculati (1850: 240) named but did not describe the species. Fairchild (1971: 107), Leonardi et al. (1995: 148) and Mazzotti (2011: 166) reported the Osculati collection in Milan as destroyed. We also did not find any material during this study. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name “ Pangonia ”, which is an “incorrect subsequent spelling of Pangonius Latreille, 1802 or subsequent usage of Pangonia Macquart, 1834 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 138).
