Tabanus ignobilis Rondani, 1875 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1875c: 457.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Stone 1975: 60).

REMARKS: Rondani (1875c: 457) described Tabanus ignobilis from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens and not giving a range of lengths, from material collected by G. Doria and O. Beccari. Ricardo (1911: 181) reported “Type ♀ ” without knowing of two additional females, one each in the MZUF and MSNG, which brings the original type series to three specimens. Ricardo did not unambiguously indicate a single specimen the type, therefore she did not designate a lectotype (I.C.Z.N. 1999: Article 74.6). Guiglia (1957: 197) reported the holotype (♀) in the MSNG. The additional two females in the MSNG and MZUF not examined by Ricardo are paralectotypes. In his original description, Rondani did not explicitly refer to a single specimen, therefore Guiglia’s “ holotype ” specimen must be considered as the lectotype (I.C.Z.N. 1999: Article 74.6). The additional two females in the MSNG and MZUF not examined by Ricardo or Guiglia are paralectotypes.
