CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Urophora stylata ( Fabricius, 1775) ( Foote 1984: 145, White & Korneyev 1989: 360, Norrbom et al. 1999: 243).
REMARKS: Rondani (1870a: 17) proposed Urophora venabulata for Oxyphora cardui (Linnaeus, 1758) sensu Robineau-Desvoidy (1830: 757) , which he considered a new species. Rondani referred to Robineau-Desvoidy’s redescription of Oxyphora cardui , which was based on two males, and to an unspecified number of specimens he had collected and also received from L. Bellardi and A.H. Haliday. Therefore, the type material should be in the collections of Robineau-Desvoidy (MNHN) and Rondani. No specimen under the name Oxyphora cardui is present in the MNHN (Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle 2020). White & Korneyev (1989: 361) mentioned ten syntypes in the MZUF. Ian M. White examined the MZUF type material in 1986, adding the label “ lectotype ” and “ paralectotype ” under the specimens, but without, as far we know, formally publishing a lectotype designation. In order to promote nomenclatural stability, we give credit to I.M. White and here designate as a lectotype for Urophora venabulata Rondani, 1870 the female labeled as such by him.
