ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1861e: 99 (key), 101 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ insula Melita [ Malta Island]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, lectotype (missing abdomen) ( MZUF: Box 16): Phoricheta Rnd. / lacrimans Rnd. / 840 / Malt. / lectotype [not designated] Phorichaeta lacrimans Rond., B. Herting det. / = Wagneria lacrimans Rond., B. Herting det.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Wagneria lacrimans ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 381, Pape et al. 1995: 29, Cerretti 2010: 460, O’Hara et al. 2020: 180).

REMARKS: Rondani (1861e: 101) described Phoricheta lacrimans from two specimens: “ exemplaria duo misit D. Schembri [two specimens sent by Mr. Schembri]”. Benno Herting examined the MZUF type material, adding the label “ lectotype ” under the single female, without, as far as we know, publishing a lectotype designation. We also found only one of the two specimens of the type series. An additional MZUF male (Box C) from “Apenn.” [= Apennines] is not included in the type series because it is not from the type locality. In order to promote nomenclatural stability, we give credit to B. Herting and here designate as a lectotype for Phoricheta lacrimans Rondani, 1861 the MZUF female labeled as such by him .
