Macrolampis Motschulsky, 1853 View in CoL ( Figure 4 S, V View Figure 4 )

Macrolampis is similar to Photinus but can be distinguished by males having an elongated, parallel outline, elytron 6-8x longer than wide, and sternum VIII less retracted under VII (in comparison to Photinus ), and the brachypterous females ( McDermott 1964; Zaragoza- Caballero 2015b). It is important to note that the Macrolampis species at the Serra dos Órgãos cannot be morphologically discriminated from Photinus , with which they share many structural similarities, including genital morphology (not shown). Therefore, their current placement in Macrolampis is doubtful, despite comparison with the type material in museum collections. This underlines the need of a taxonomic review for many neotropical lampyrid taxa, including the Photinina genera.
