Diagnosis

Distinguished from A. pleomelarrosus by smaller size, acute temple with linear postgenae, striae of elytra punctate, irregular, forming loops posterad, body orange-red. Pronotum wider at posterior margin than at anterior. Similar in length and color to involucer -group species though with fully developed flight wings, wider medial setal brush of labrum, and lateral margin of elytron less explanate; A. debbiae 3x width of marginal bead ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 J) and upturned near humeral angle and involucer -group species> 5x width of marginal bead ( Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 A, 4I, 4K) and not upturned at humeral angle. Similar in size and proportion to some Prosopeus species with Prosopeus characterized by a narrow elytral margin, = 2x width of bead and planar.

Description

Size: Length 4.7mm, Width 1.7mm.

Color: Head dark orange-red, scutellum dark orange-red to orange-red, remainder of body orange-red.

Head: Transverse, 0.74mm L, 1.74mm W, L/W ratio 0.43 ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 F). Punctation coarse on vertex, definite, dense, most punctures contiguous with one or more adjacent punctures, intervals subglabrous, interrupted by fine lines. Clypeus with shallower, finer, punctation, microsculpture granular, appearing roughened. Eye length 0.20mm, facets 14–17, medial margin arcuate. Temple distinct, long, forming obtuse angle with straight postgena. Antennomeres 1–5 elongate, 6 subquadrate, 7 and 8 transverse. Club compact slightly longer than wide, L/W ratio 1.3.

Prothorax: Pronotum transverse, 1.02–1.07mm L, 1.55–1.63mm W, L/W ratio 0.66 ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 C). Surface uneven, disc flattened in center with 4 depressions, 2 immediately in front of middle, proximally on either side of midline, posterior depressions approximate with anterior depressions, larger. Lateral margin weakly explanate from behind anterior angle to midpoint, increasingly explanate to raised posterior angle. Lateral margin evenly curved to behind midpoint then convergent and straight with shallow sinuation anterad of distinct oblique posterior angle. Widest near midpoint, anterior/posterior width ratio 0.76. Broadly emarginate anteriorly, emargination straight medially, convex laterally, anterior angles moderately to sharply rounded, posterior margin shallowly bisinuate, convex and projecting at midline. Lateral marginal bead definite, extended from convex portion of anterior margin to near hind angle, subobsolete basal marginal bead present laterad, wide and indefinite mediad. Punctation coarse, shallow, dense, often contiguous with adjacent punctures at center of disc, obsolete laterad, intervals granular to fine lines. Prosternal process narrow between coxae, expanded behind coxae, apex with long fimbria ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 G), weakly recurved dorsad behind coxae, meeting mesosternum at ~50° angle ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 H).

Elytra: 1.63mm L, 0.93mm W, L/W ratio 1.75 ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 J). Surface uneven, striae narrow, slightly irregular, interstices wider than striae, interstice 5 widened anterad and posterad, 7 widened just posterad midpoint with obscure setal tuft. Interstices glabrous, uneven, with irregular fine lines and punctures. Lateral face of elytra with impression posterad of humeri, margin laterad of impression slightly concave, straight behind, incurved for short distance before rounded hind angle, posterior margin smoothly contiguous with posterior angle. Lateral margin weakly explanate, widest behind humeral angle, 3x width of bead and upturned.

Legs: Tarsomere 1 with lobes reduced, 2 with lobes larger, 3 narrow elongate ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 I).

Abdomen: Female; surface of tergites 5 and 6 with granular microsculpture nearly obsolete medially, increasingly distinct laterad, punctures shallow, coarse, few contiguous punctures mediad, increasingly dense and indistinct laterad. Pygidium with punctures coarse, longitudinally elongate, apex short, broad, margin of tip forming a flattened lip around elevated median area, fimbria short laterally, increased in length to midline ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 E). Microsculpture similar to tergites 5 and 6. Sternite 7 broadly rounded, fimbria on lateral 1/3 ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 D).

Female genitalia: Gonocoxites elongate, attenuate at tip. Lateral groove short, 1/5 length gonocoxite 2, 2 prestylar setae, stylus subapical, approximately 1/2 stylus length from tip, 2 apical stylar setae ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 B). Bursa copulatrix elongate, spiculate patch on inside of 90° bend, concentrated on dorsal surface. Spermatheca with apical depression shallow, funnel shaped, tip rounded. Base of gland with small bend ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 A).

Holotype ɗ, labeled: "Hawaii Island, Kohala Mts., Puu Pala, Kohala Forest Reserve, 4,300 ft. el., 13–X–1997, Mossy Ohia fog, 20º 06’ 42” N, 155º 45’ 02” W., J. K. Liebherr coll." (CUIC).

Paratypes: 1 Ψ (CUIC). 1 Ψ (USNM). 1 Ψ (BPBM).

Etymology: Specific epithet honors my wife, Debbie Ewing.

Distribution: Known from the type locality, Olaa, and Volcano.

Habits: Uncertain. Collected by beating Cibotium ferns, also under bark of decaying Clermontia kohalae with numerous endemic nitidulids, Prosopeus varius ( Sharp 1881) , and fogged with pyrethrin from moss covered Metrosideros polymorpha trunk.
