Tetranychus misumaiensis n. sp.

( Figs. 25–33 View FIGURES 25 – 33 )

(Japanese name: Misumai-namihadani)

Description. FEMALE. Body reddish. Rostrum reaching distal part of femur I. Palpus ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 25 – 33 ) with spinneret 1.5 to 2.0 times as long as broad; dorsal sensillum (solenidion) fusiform. Peritreme hooked distally ( Fig. 27 View FIGURES 25 – 33 ). Dorsal setae on idiosoma much longer than distances between consecutive setae. Opisthosomal striae longitudinal between e1 and f1, forming a diamond-shaped figure between these setae. Genital flap with transverse striae; area immediately anterior to flap with longitudinal striae.

Numbers of setae and solenidia (in parentheses) on leg segments: coxae 2-2-1-1, trochanters 1-1-1-1, femora 10-6-4-4, genua 5-5-4-4, tibiae 9(1)-7-6-7, tarsi 13(1)+ 2 dupl.-13(1)+ 1 dupl.-9(1)-10(1). Tarsus I with 4 tactile setae proximal to proximal set of duplex setae, and 1 solenidion at level of proximal duplex setae ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 25 – 33 ); tarsus II with 3 tactile setae and 1 solenidion proximal to duplex setae ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 25 – 33 ). Empodia with minute mediodorsal spur and 3 pairs of proximoventral hairs.

MALE. Color similar to female. Palpus ( Fig. 26 View FIGURES 25 – 33 ) with spinneret about 2.5 times as long as broad; dorsal sensillum fusiform. Opisthosoma with transverse striae dorsocentrally. Aedeagus ( Figs. 28–29 View FIGURES 25 – 33 ) with shaft gently upturned distally to form a stout neck; terminal knob slender, about 2 long, with dorsal margin weakly convex; anterior tip of knob acutely angulate; the posterior projection elongate, tapering; axis of knob subparallel with axis of shaft.

Numbers of setae and solenidia (in parentheses) on leg segments: coxae 2-2-1-1, trochanters 1-1-1-1, femora 10-6-4-4, genua 5-5-4-4, tibiae 9(4)-7-6-7, tarsi 13(3)+ 2 dupl.-13(1)+ 1 dupl.-9(1)-10(1). Tarsus I with 4 tactile setae and 2 solenidia poximal to proximal set of duplex setae, and 1 solenidion at level of proximal duplex setae ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 25 – 33 ); tarsus II with 3 tactile setae and 1 solenidion proximal to duplex setae ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 25 – 33 ). Empodium I with distinct mediodorsal spur and pair of tridigitate proximoventral spurs ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 25 – 33 ). Empodia II–IV with small mediodorsal spur and 3 pairs of proximoventral hairs ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 25 – 33 ).

Type series. Holotype male (NSMT-Ac 12453): Misumai, Sapporo, Hokkaido, 23 Sept. 2005 (T. Gotoh leg.), on Apios sp. ( Fabaceae ). Paratypes: 5 males (NSMT-Ac 12454-12458) & 10 females (NSMT-Ac 12459- 12460), 4 males & 8 females (KUM), data same as for holotype.

Remarks. The new species is assigned to Flechtmann & Knihinicki’s (2002) Group 9 of Tetranychus . The aedeagus of this species resembles that of T. ferrandezi Baker & Pritchard, 1962 from Costa Rica. However, the anterior tip of its terminal knob is acutely angulate, while in ferrandezi the tip is widely rounded ( Baker & Pritchard, 1962).

Etymology. This species is named after the type locality, Misumai.
