S. problematicum ( Stossich, 1902) n. comb.

Type host. Totanus calidris Linnaeus (Not a recognized species = nomen dubium) ( Charadriiformes : Scolopacidae ).

Type locality. Europe; specific type locality unknown.

Additional hosts. Common greenshank, Tringa nebularia (Gunnerus) (Syn. Totanus glottis [Gunnerus]); wood sandpiper, Tringa glareola Linnaeus (Syn. Totanus glareolus Vieillot ) ( Charadriiformes : Scolopacidae ).

Additional locality. Africa, specific locality unknown—Yamaguti (1971).

Previously proposed synonyms. Cyclocoelum (Postpharyngeum) problematicum Stossich, 1902 — Witenberg (1923); Cyclocoelum obscurum ( Leidy, 1887) — Joyeux & Baer (1927) and Dubois (1959); and Cyclocoelum mutabile ( Zeder, 1800) — Bashkirova (1950).

Remarks. This species was originally described as Cyclocoelum problematicum Stossich, 1902 ; however, Stossich (1902) provided only body length, body width, egg length and egg width. Kossack (1911) mentioned that Stossich (1902) was concerned that this species really might not be distinct. However, Kossack (1911) found enough differences in the specimens used in the original description (one of which demonstrated “perfectly the characteristic of C. problematicum ”) and redescribed the species. No oral or ventral sucker described—Stossich (1902); Kossack (1911).
