comb. nov.

W. facioi ( Brenes & Arroyo, 1962) View in CoL n. comb.

Type host. Northern jacana or jaçana, Jacana spinosa spinosa (Linnaeus) ( Charadriiformes : Jacanidae ).

Type locality. Proviencia de Puntarenas, Costa Rica.

Remarks. This species was originally described as Cyclocoelum (Haematotrephus) facioi Brenes & Arroyo, 1962 . It was transferred to Haematotrephus by Yamaguti (1971). It was originally described as having the vitelline fields as “joining in the posterior end” (= confluent posteriorly); however, the illustration ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 5 – 9 of Brenes & Arroyo 1962) appears to show that the vitelline fields are not confluent posteriorly. In this species the pretesticular ovary forms a triangle with the testes (Haematotrephinae), the genital pore is postpharyngeal, the vitelline fields appear to not be confluent posteriorly and the testes are side by side, placing this species in Wardianum . However, if the vitelline fields are confluent posteriorly as originally described, it would likely require the erection of a new genus in the subfamily to facilitate this species. No oral or ventral sucker described—Brenes & Arroyo (1962).
