Type host. Not identified by van Beneden (1858).
Type locality. Europe; specific type locality unknown.
Listed hosts. Species of Anas Linnaeus ; Ardea Linnaeus ; Fulica Linnaeus ; Gallinula Brisson ; Himantopus Brisson ; Numenius Brisson ; Rallus Linnaeus ; Totanus Bechstein and Vanellus Brisson—Witenberg (1923) , Yamaguti (1971); Unidentified charadriiform—Bona et al. (1995).
Additional locality. Italy—Bona et al. (1995).
Remarks. Van Beneden (1858) provided a minimal description and an illustration which did not clearly show the distribution of the vitelline fields of Monostoma mutabile Zeder ” (= P. vanbenedeni ) from material labeled “ Monostoma mutabile Zeder ”. Kanev et al. (2002a) provided an original illustration of this species. Witenberg (1923) erected Promptenovum Witenberg, 1923 to accommodate Promptenovum vanbenedeni , but he did not provide any additional descriptive information for this species. No oral or ventral sucker described—van Beneden (1858); Witenberg (1923).
